(NECN: Scot Yount, Fitchburg, Mass.) - Residents in Fitchburg, Mass. have reason to worry after approximately 25,000 homes lost power after an October Nor'easter dumped heavy, wet snow on the city.

An ice storm in 2008 left thousands in the dark for weeks.

"The extent of the damage is almost as much as the 2008 ice storm," said Mayor Lisa Wong. "Of course, we're hoping that the warm weather will help alleviate the situation so that we don't have residents without power for three weeks like we did in 2008."

Unitil says that the power restoration phase has not yet begun.

"Our crews are out working with first-responders," said Alec O'Meara, the Media Relations Manager of Unitil. "We're trying to get untangled wires and trying to get the roads safe and the roads clear. The other thing that's going on is damage assessment. Before we can talk about when we think customers are going to be back on, we have to complete the damage assessment phase."
